Abstract: In this paper, a new meta-heuristic solution approach for loss reduction in radial distribution systems through feeder reconfiguration and placement of distributed generation is presented. The proposed algorithm makes use of Mehrabian & Lucas’s heuristic ‘Invasive Weed Optimization’ (IWO) in generating optimal solutions. Forward/Backward sweep power flow method is used to solve the radial distribution system. The proposed approach is tested on standard IEEE 33-bus and 69-bus system. The results obtained from the study have shown that the proposed algorithm can be used as a new alternative solution technique for finding optimal operation of distribution system.
