dc.description.abstractCities across the world arc growing in terms of its urban area and in number. Every city has its own travel demand based on its population, income, industrial and commercial activity. These travel demands have various characteristics in terms of trip rate, trip length, walk, public transport, congestion levels and bus supply and road safety. There is a great need for study of the travel characteristics to predict the same of newly developing/planning cities for the future. With the help of this study, the approximate travel behaviour can be estimated. By this travel assessment for the new city, supply of transport infrastructure can be managed effectively. For this study, a total of 30 cities of different population background have been selected. For the same cities, various travel details were collected from secondary data source. This study reveals that there exists a moderate to good relation between travel characteristics and population. Though above statement is a presumptive, it needs to be verified scientifically and a relation is to be established. As a part of this, attempt has been made for relating various variables with population. It is found that trip rale (all modes) varies exponentially, trip rate (motorized) varies logarithmic, trip length varies as power function, walk (%) varies as power function, public transport (%) varies linearly, congestion index varies linearly, and road safety index varies as power function with population of the city.en_US
