The protection of extra high voltage transmission lines from lightning is of considerable importance as a result of the excessive flashover rate of such lines in the United States. The problem is quite complex, because the factors involved are many and relatively few accurate data are available. Interest in the subject is evidenced by the large number of publications appearing in recent years. It is the aim of this paper to evaluate critically the various component factors involved in the light of the recent excessive flashover rate of extra high voltage transmission lines.en_US
