This paper deals with the application of phase locked loop control principle to the speed control of D.C. shunt motor employing field current variation. The modelling and stability analysis of the above scheme is carried out for small as well as large variations of the motor load. The transient performance of the drive is greatly improved when an additional stabilising signal derived from the derivative of the output is applied. The analytical results obtained for a typical. 230 V 7.5 H.P., 1000 RPM D.C. Shunt motor are presented. This scheme has the advantages of low cost, compactness and ease of control over the armature voltage control method.en_US
